History of Physics, Theory and Nature of Science Teaching. Science & People without Frontiers

The Rationale

      Historical epistemology of science is one of the possible approaches to understanding the history and foundations of physics combining historical/epistemological aspects (i.e., primary sources, historical hypothesis, shared knowledge, epistemological interpretations) and using logical and mathematical inquiring. One might ask: what are physics and mathematical objects in a theory? For example in the 19^th century, one can see scientific theories (particularly, mathematical and physical quantities along the experiments, modeling, properties and structures) which work in a unique discipline: physics mathematics (or mathematics physics). It is not a mathematical physics as mathematical application of physics or vice–versa, but rather it is a new way to work with science. New methodological approach to solve physical (in origin) problems where the quantities may be physical and mathematical at the same time (first novelty), and measurements are not a priority or a prerogative (second novelty) to make a coherent physical science. In addition, it is a structured discipline among mathematical quantities and physical structures (including logic and language) in order to “[...] reducing [experimental electric and magnetic] phenomena into scientific form [...]” (Maxwell 1865, p. 459). By focusing on mathematics, physics and its relationship, an interdisciplinary approach among history, philosophy, epistemology, logic and foundations of physical and mathematical sciences might be adopted. In this talk, some historical-philosophical case-studies on relationship physics-mathematics are presented and educationally discussed, i.e.: lack of relationship physics-logics, space and time in mechanics, mechanics and thermodynamics, ad absurdum proofs, non-Euclidean geometries and the space in physics, planetary model and quantum mechanics, infinite-infinitesimal and measures in laboratory, heat-temperature-friction, and reversibility phenomena, concept of set and field, continuum-discrete models in mechanics and theory of elasticity of the XIX cent., hypothesis ad hoc in the theory, local-global interpretation and differential equations-integral, point-range and physical phenomena, mechanics, kinetic model of gases and thermodynamics.

       It is a widespread argument in the relevant literature that an adequate understanding of the Nature of Science (NOS) is a central component of scientific literacy. It is therefore well established the cultural, educational, personal and scientific benefits of infusing the history and philosophy of science into science programmes and curriculum, i.e., of teaching about the NOS while teaching the content of science; such as physics or biology.

          Accordingly, in the last 25 years or so, much attention has been focused on developing reliable and efficient tests to asses NOS views held by scientists, science/ physics teachers, for instance, and students, to measure NOS learning, as well as developing knowledge and pedagogical expertise in teaching NOS. In order to do so, the literature explicitly or implicitly advocates basic tenets (criteria) of NOS for science/physics teaching.

          It has usually been included among these basic tenets for a more satisfactory understanding of the NOS criteria such as that science is a dynamic, on-going activity, rather than a static accumulation of information, that there is no “one” single scientific method, but as many methods as there are practices, that science is always tentative, that the uses of inference, observation, and evidence in science are theory laden, and so on.

        Although there is not a consensus among science educators about these basic tenets, at least some of these criteria have well been incorporated into the relevant literature. We want to explore in this summer school new frontiers in the teaching of the NOS. Are there any important tenets that has not yet been well covered (or not covered at all) by the literature and should be included in the teaching of the NOS?

         Steven Weinberg, American theoretical physicist, pointed out for example in a popular physics book that “the more the universe seems comprehensible, the more it also seems pointless”. Nevertheless, readers of popular science books, as well as students in formal science education, hoping somehow that scientific inquiry could address this very human search for meaning, still seek for some sort of meaning in the scientific picture of the universe – such as so often in popular science books on cosmology, quantum field theory (or particle physics), and so on.

         As science education/physics teaching does not clarify that, it is an epistemological issue, concerning the understanding of the NOS, that misleads people in searching for meaning in science, as epitomized by Wittgenstein as even if all possible scientific questions be answered, the problems of life have still not been touched at all. Should that important realization be included in the teaching of the NOS?

        As a not exhaustive list of possibilities, we envision to be covering in this summer school such possible new tenets as the example above and much more. How much for instance of what we have learnt from feminist epistemology and “women in science” literature has been included in the teaching of NOS (if any at all)? What about postcolonial science and technology studies?

        We invite those willing to push the envelope and contribute to new reflections on the history of physics & teaching of NOS to participate in this 3^rd International Summer School for Sciences, History and Philosophy of Sciences, Technology & Science Education which aims to provide the platform to young scholars, post-docs, PhD candidates, and early-career researchers to interact with more experienced researchers to explore cutting-edge topics in the history and philosophy of science and science teaching.

      You are welcome to send your research abstract to the 3^rd International Summer School for Sciences, History and Philosophy of Sciences, Technology & Science Education which will be held in Lille in 2019 under the theme “History of Physics, Theory and Nature of Science. Science & People without Frontiers”. We expect early career and junior scholars to work together with senior scholars on their work in progress as well as on a set of bibliography and primary sources selected by the senior scholars.

By Train 

There are two stations in Lille centre: "Lille Flandres" and "Lille Europe", about 400m from each other:

• Lille Europe station is a transit station for TGVs from every region in France. You can also catch Eurostars London (1h20), Brussels (35 minutes), Lyon (2h50), Strasbourg (3h20), Marseille (4h30), Bordeaux (5h) as well. Some TGVs coming from Paris (1h) and continuing to the coast may also stop there. It is ca. 7 minutes walk from the Venue.
• Lille Flandres station is the final stop for TGVs arriving from the Gare du Nord in Paris. The Regional Express trains leave this station for the different towns in the region. Here you can take metro "1". See above.

By Paris Airport

• The best and easiest is Roissy Charles De Gaulle airport north of Paris, you can get a frequent TGV (High Speed Train) at the airport station which will take you directly to the centre of Lille (55 minutes non-stop or 1h20 with stops).
• If you arrive by flight from CDG Airport, in the following some information to reach the CDG TGV station are provided:

• From Terminals 1 or 3 you need to take the free channel CDGVAL and get out at stop "Terminal 2 Gare TGV".
• From Terminal 2, you can reach the station on foot (except from Terminal 2G, from which you need to take a bus).
• Then, once in the station, go at level 2 if you need to buy or print your ticket (at a big yellow automatic ticket machine or from a salesman at a ticket office desk). Platforms are at Level 1.

 

By Lille Airport

Lille Airport (over 70 national and international destinations) is situated ca. 10 Km from the Lille centre, of a very dense motorway network: mainly the A1 Paris-Lille, the A25 Dunkerque-Lille, the A23 Valenciennes-Lille, the A22 Gand-Lille. This location makes it very easy to get to the airport. Apart from its proximity to Belgium and the towns of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region, the airport is only 20 minutes from the centre of Lille and its Railway stations, a Lille airport shuttle links the airport to those stations. Lille airport shuttle connects the airport (at door A) and the city centre (bus stop sign “Liaison aér port” outside the Euralille shopping centre, just i front MESHS venue). It is available 7 days a week. Journey time: 20 min.

• From Charleroi Airport South Brussels you can take a Flibco airport shuttle for tickets and schedule on line. This bus takes ca. 1h15 to arrive in Lille. It stops at Lille Europe Station.

• From Brussels Zaventem Airport you can get a regional express train which will take you to Brussels-Midi train station (or take a taxi). From there, a "Eurostar" train or a TGV will take you directly to Lille in ca. 33 min.

This 4 days programme combines a core of formal-and-methodological Historical-Philosophical teaching on one side and Science Teaching as well as Science & Science Education on the other, with a participative approach that includes participant problem solving, round tables, panel discussions and collaborative group work. It will mobilise the latest evidence and a multidisciplinary team of experts.
The manifold experiences of participants in history, Epistemology, Philosophy of sciences, Sciences, Education and Practice will be central, with participants sharing and developing their perspectives i.e., a concrete case study that cuts across themes.

Finally, no particular skilled background in scientific topics is required as the programme is focused on providing a multidisciplinary educational experience. Our experts will adapt their topics according to the participants' background.

SUMMER SCHOOL - GENERAL AIM

The aim of the IDTC Lille International Summer Schools is to provide a platform to the young researchers, post-doc, Ph.D. candidates teachers and practitioners from both academia as well as education School to meet and share cutting-edge development in the field. Particularly ISSHPSE 2019 mainly aims to improve-innovate scientific, historical/literature and philosophical techniques of investigations within science teaching making education and foundations of sciences more interesting, theoretical and experimental standpoints. Further, it is recognized that science is an important component of the EU cultural heritage and provides the most important explanations of the material world. Recently fewer youths seem to be interested in science and technical subjects. Does the problem lie in wider socio cultural changes, and the ways in which young people in the EU countries now live and wish to shape their lives? Alternatively, is it due to failings within science education itself? How make sure reasoning-learning & conceptual frameworks, critical attitude & didactic theories?  What does mean today: Schooling, Professionalization & Institutions?

Generally speaking current school science curricula was constructed for preparing students for university and college scientific degrees. Such education does not meet the needs of the majority of students who will not pursue tertiary studies in science or even science related fields. These students require knowledge of the main ideas and methodologies of science.  What about of cultural process? It seems that the didactics of scientific disciplines across Europe failed to solve the crisis between scientific education and EU social economic development: new teaching methods, changed new curricula and purposes.

The sessions are designed as a way of sharing good, engaging and innovative approaches to educational, scientific, historical and philosophical teaching in the basic-disciplines, i.e,: curriculum, materials, primary texts, science in practice, experiments, classwork, assessment, etc.. We did our best to promote more engagement, interest and learning of history and philosophy of science & science teaching/science education.

Finally,

how can history and philosophy of sciences assist in solving the crisis in science both education and foundations in Europe? How new science education produce reliable knowledge and the limits to certainty?

They were elected in Rio (2017, DLMPS/DHST Congress) – as the joint « Teaching Commission » of the Division of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science and The International Union for History and Philosophy of Science and Technology).

The main goal is to assist, promote and show how teaching integrated sciences as well as history and philosophy of sciences are beneficial subjects in universities, and high schools, where appropriate.
